^I'm not trying to cop this style of presentation from my friend Tony. The truth is that I was just too lazy to put each character in their own individual image. Check out Tony's blog for the real deal!

^ I'm sure I've seen my pal Ryan draw something like this before. I guess I have a habit of stealing from my friends. You should check out the rad drawings on Ryan's rad tumblr!

I went to Japan for three weeks this past September. I love Japan. I kept a travel log and did a few (and I mean a few) drawings. Here's some scans!:

^ I got that sticker from the incredible Ghibli Museum. I cried in there a few times when the permanent exhibit reminded me of why I love animation.

^ According to the map in the 16 hour flight, from Toronto to Tokyo, this was my route.

^ Whoops!

Here's some scribbles somewhat resembling the cool Shishi I saw at a temple:

^ My girlfriend's mother took me to a sake museum. There was supposed to be some sake at the end of the tour but we couldn't find any. Though what I did find was this way-cool stamp! A few places in Japan had stamps like this, so I got to fill my book with cool memories.

^ I couldn't leave Japan without first finding some retro Famicom stores! This was my poor attempt at copying some Japanese directions, and you know what? They saved me from getting (too) lost!

Hide your eyes! There are nude girly drawings in this post!

I don't know how to draw women. There! I said it! I've been on a girly-drawing kick the past few days -- trying to grasp the female form. I've got a long way to go! These doodles are faaarrr from perfect (there's so many obvious drawing/anatomy mistakes...), but I'm posting them because I like them right now.

^Did these after copying some Kaitie Rice girls. (I was also looking at some of my pal Steffi's drawings, as well.)^It must be hard-wired into mens' DNA to draw nude women with guns......... X_x I don't even own a gun!

^Did this for a pal of mine. I promised that I wouldn't post it without first putting underwear on her (whoops! Her undies are crooked! But that happens in real life, too... right?)^I made a point to stop giving guns to these girls. I don't know why I gave that gal a basketball. I don't play sports! I actually had to look up what a basketball looked like. It makes me laugh that I have more knowledge of women than I do of basketballs! OH! Also, that basketball drawing was partly inspired by Modigliani.

^ I was telling my old beloved roommate, Mel, about this fly character I have. I was thinking of him as being big enough to smoke cigars, but she was thinking of him being so small that he could only smoke cigar butts!
^ There's a lotta problems with this sucker, but I still really like the drawing. There's something good going on with it.
^I must have drawn this guy really light, because I didn't know he was there until I accidentally scanned him! I don't know why I didn't work through the drawing, and finish it. I love how his cheek is squished up against his cigar. It's kinda cute, even if he's addicted to smoking!

My girlfriend has a plush dog, and I draw it.

Also, ^this frog was something I drew in another friend's birthday card. She seemed to like it, but I wasn't really digging it. It was originally done with markers (lines in brushpen), and the colors were so saturated that they killed my eyes. I liked it a little more in grey, but... I'll probably be embarrassed by this drawing in about a month!

The drawings in this post were lined with ebony pencil and brushpen. Brushpens are cool.

This is going to be for my Dad's lovely wall of 'accomplishments'. He has recently started framing and hanging pieces of paper which represent his children's 'accomplishments'. I don't consider anything I've done academically to be an accomplishment, since they're all something I HAD to do while growing up. It's embarrassing to be represented that way! So, I decided to make some pieces that I can hang up on his 'accomplishments' wall instead.

But, this needs some major work before I'm going to be happy with it. haha

Vintage Animation Desk up for grabs!!

To raise a question I once purposed on this blog:

What would you say if I quit cartoons?

Well folks, I guess it's no surprise by now to announce that I'm not coming back to school for next semester, or the rest of the program. But just to be clear, I'm not quitting cartoons; I'm just quitting 'cartoon school'. For my reasons: I'm going to leave the Sheridan politics off of my beloved blog for now, and just give you my personals reasons for leaving: I'm not getting enough from the program. Most of the teachers are fantastic (or is it 'some', and not 'most'?), but that still doesn't cut it for me. The animation program at Sheridan doesn't craft you into a filmmaker like the Media Arts program at Sheridan does. The truth is that being in a live-action/documentary program (somewhere, and not in Toronto because I like trees) will give me more opportunities to become a filmmaker. This beat-around-the-bush theory isn't doing it for me. Don't get me wrong, theory is very important, but you need to get your hands dirty too! What I'm saying is that for me personally, I need something more and/or different than that which the program offers.

Anyway, now to the REAL point of this post:
Last year, Michel Hannan gave me a vintage animation desk that was sitting in her basement. She said it "has been around Toronto", but she didn't offer much more than that, so I don't know who owned it or where it even came from.

I fixed this desk up with practically no tools or materials, and it ended up being pretty sturdy! It's a great ol' desk! It has a wooden disk included, and it's height/pitch adjustable. All you need to do is tape a pegbar to it, put a lamp under 'er, and go to town! It even has a nice clean spot beside the disk which is a great place to tape an x-sheet!

So...... who wants the desk? I'm leaving in a week, and I unfortunately cannot take this beautiful desk with me! So anyone who is willing to take it off of my hands and into their heart can have it. Just drop me a line (mitch [dot] kennedy [at] gmail [dot] com). This desk has to go to somebody who is willing to treat it with the admiration and appreciation it deserves. The owner-to-be of this desk also needs to pass it on to somebody new after they are finished with it -- it cannot end up as firewood!

Come on folks! Let's continue this desk's mysterious history! Actually, let's start signing it before we hand it onto someone else. I'm going to sign the bottom of it.

I had to run an errand in town today, which happened to be on the same street as Massey Hall. I happened to have my camera with me, so I decided to take a stroll over to the beautiful old building. Faaaarig! Now I'm twice as ticked off about not having tickets for any of Neil Young's THREE shows there later this month. HOW could something like this happen to me? HOW!? WHYYY!?!??

..... alright, so, I'll keep drawing cartoons for now......

Even though art is self-indulgent and it doesn't really help anyone. Building houses or supporting fair trade helps people far more... but I'll keep making cartoons until something makes me want to drop it and retreat to Brazil for a while.

Until then, here's two characters I've been doodling for a bit. I need to seriously come up with designs for them, because I want to use them in an upcoming project (starting in the fall! Yea!).

They're a Time Travelling duo named Gribbit and Giblin! (Giblin's name is highly tentatvie). The images are bad photos because I don't have a scanner right now.

I tried 'im lanky.

Buuuttt I like 'im pudgy and small.

Maybe he's cool with muscles?

I didn't know what to do with his wings... so he has four wings in this drawing. Maybe he'll just not have wings anymore.

There was a t-shirt design contest for the animation program here at Sheridan. This design of mine made the top ten, but it didn't win. Some of the faculty almost picked up after, but that didn't happen either. Too bad -- it would have been funny to see the BAA staff with drunken animals on their shirts!

I still like the design. After a few drawing adjustments I might put it on a shirt for myself. Enjoy! =)

We had to do a storyboard in class based on a provided 'script'... then in digital tools class, we had to make an animatic with Adobe Premiere.

I saw some fourth-year people doing some cool effects and animation with Adobe After Effects, so this animatic was an experiment to see if I could animate in Premiere. Yup, you can keyframe things pretty nicely in that ol' program. Anyway, enough chit-chat! That's the animatic I did with the storyboard panels.

(PS: Google Video totally washed out the grays, so this thing is mostly white. Sheesh.)

Owning Your Own Crap!

Amid(CartoonBrew.com) posted a link to this article by Keith Lango about maintaining the rights to your own creations. I don't normally re-post news (you should all be getting it from Cartoon Brew anyway!), but this deals with something that I've always been afraid of. Remember how John K signed away his rights to Ren & Stimpy? Do you recall the story of how Grim Natwick lost his rights to Betty Boop? Even the geniuses at Schlessinger Studios owned no rights to all the amazing Looney Tunes characters they created for us. In fact, anything they created while under Schlessinger Studio contract belong to the studio! Some studios today still have that policy.

Anyway, read that article!

If I can find where that Grim post was so many months ago which talks about him losing Betty, I'll post that too.

This post may not actually be very big, but it has Megaman, so it's certainly a MEGA POST!

I guess you could call these first few images 'concept work'. I have an idea in my noggin' about a silly stupid small short film I want to make. The story is pretty lame, but I want to do it anyway to prove to myself that I can actually complete a film! Maybe I should go for it. Wuddya think? Bah, I don't need your filthy answers! I can make up my own friggin' mind!

Anyway, after the few pieces of 'concept art', there's a slew of doodles I collected while doing a nice clean of my room. You get to see them before I store or throw them away. Enjoy this stuff!

... posting work from school. I don't want my blog to be the same generic junk that we're all forced to do in first year. Besides, people do a better job at that stuff than I do... but since schoolwork is the only work I'm producing right now, it's all I can show!

Here's my ball and tail assignment. This was my first and only go at 'er, so there's issues with it that I didn't work out -- but there's also a lot of other things I put into it. I didn't like the way we were supposed to do it, so I came up with a different way of doing it (the anticipation of the examples shown in class don't work with the actual jump. I modeled mine after some squirrel keys they gave to us). One of my elements is making the body longer (rather than a ball), and putting the line of action right through it. It doesn't make any sense to put the line of action in the tail only, if you ask me. There's also some intention volume changes (and then some unintentional ones! Whoops!). You CAN change the volume of a character in an animation. Maybe not if I worked for 1940's Disney... but I don't work for 1940's Disney. I work for me.

I'm not saying be sloppy, and that anything goes. What I'm saying is that I have every right to explore and create or find my own theories. They're trying to teach us about the 'Industry'. I don't care about the industry. You don't need a degree to work in the industry (don't believe me? Watch Teletoon). If anything, I came here to school to avoid the industry for a while, and take the time to develop myself in my own way.

If this sounds like a pile of crap for avoiding learning the rules of animation, then I'm coming off wrong. I'm not opposed to learning the rules. It doesn't work without the rules. I'd just rather find them myself. I'd rather take the back door in, thanks.

Besides, all of the theories they're trying to teach me are applied.

Anyway, that's some of my thoughts for now. Here's my ball and tail! =)

I don't have much to post lately. I don't have a scanner right now, nor do I have my camera with me... soooo you're going to get old photography from me! I love taking pictures, although I'm not very good at it... yet. Enjoy!
